I came across this site while surfing. I had never seen the Lansky sharpener sold retail. I bought my kit from my Snap-On dealer back in the mid to late 80's. It is the same as this standard kit except my case is black. I am a knife nut. My most prized is my 5th Special Forces SOG knife that was my father's. Also Have a few K-BARS of his. The Lansky system works and it works well. It will even bring a knife back to life. I have a friend who gave me a liner lock that had been abused. the tip was broken of and had a large area of blade edge missing. I had to use the red stone for some time to reprofile the tip. But with some elbow grease or was it the honing oil? Along with some time I was able to make the blade like new and shaving sharp. I over the years have worn out one of the red coarse stones. I at one time had the stand you bolt to a bench but found to do it right you have to constantly flip the blade to get the best edge. General rule is you only use the red to bring back the dullest edge, the medium stone does the most work. The blue coded, but red stone is a fine hone. It glides over the edge so smoothly it basically is just burnishing the edge. When done using the Lansky system you will have an edge on your blade a Special Forces operator would stake his life on!

I did not have any success with this sharpener. It is very tedious to use as the sharpening surfaces are 1/2" wide. In theory, it should maintain a constant cutting angle, but in practice the exact angle wiggles quite a bit, resulting in an uneven surface. It is simply too small to sharpen any but the smallest pocket knife.

I am a Boy Scout and have a bunch of knives. This sharpener gives you the opportunity to put different edges on the blade
